Project Overview

Hank Hazard offers players a lighthearted yet progressively challenging puzzle experience where they must manipulate in-game objects and physics to navigate Hank, a hamster in a ball, to his goal.

With over 100 carefully crafted levels, 20 unique items to experiment with, and an accessible touch-based control scheme, the game invites replayability through alternate puzzle solutions and bonus objectives. Though it’s no longer available on the App Store, Hank Hazard once entertained a broad audience of casual and dedicated puzzle fans, offering bite-sized levels that reward clever experimentation and precise timing.

Key Features
Touch-Based Physics Puzzles

Designed around iPhone’s intuitive touch inputs, each level requires players to move, rotate, or tap objects in real time to propel Hank toward safety.

Over 100 Levels & Bonus Challenges

From simple obstacle courses to elaborate contraptions, levels scale in difficulty and replayability—especially when collecting hidden golden acorns.

Diverse Puzzle Elements

Players can interact with 20 different items, each influencing Hank’s movement in unique ways, from trampolines to fans and rotating platforms.

Scoring & Progression

Advanced players can revisit earlier puzzles to beat high scores, aim for time-based challenges, or fulfill special rulesets for added achievements.

In-House Engine

Custom-built for swift level design iteration and optimized physics, ensuring every puzzle piece responds accurately and consistently to player input.

Challenges

Developing Hank Hazard was my first foray into professional game design, demanding extensive iteration to ensure each level was both engaging and approachable. Balancing difficulty proved pivotal: early prototypes sometimes frustrated new players, while seasoned puzzle enthusiasts craved more complexity. By running regular playtests with participants of varying ages and backgrounds, we gathered essential feedback that influenced level pacing, item placement, and puzzle variety. This iterative design process culminated in a responsive, kinetic environment where intuitive touch controls elevate the core puzzle-solving experience rather than overcomplicate it.

Technical Stack
  • In-House Engine: Built specifically to handle 2D physics simulations and facilitate rapid puzzle prototyping.
  • Custom Level Editor: Allowed for quick iteration of item placements, hazards, and layout changes, streamlining both design and testing processes.
  • C# or C++ (Depending on Internal Framework): Responsible for game logic, item interactions, and real-time physics calculations.
  • Photoshop / Art Tools: Creating accessible visuals and user-friendly UI elements suitable for a casual audience.
  • Development Status

Previously Launched (Now Removed): The game enjoyed a successful run on the App Store but has since been taken down.

Although no longer available, Hank Hazard left a positive impression on puzzle enthusiasts, demonstrating the power of touch-based physics gameplay.

"So much fun! Played with my family and we had an awesome time dancing to the music and wearing the fun bands. Awesome game!"

"I can't remember the last time I felt so satisfied with some game's graphics. Nowadays everything looks so grim and hollow-knight-ish, or in the other hand, too much retro and 8 bit style. Your game, yet pixelated, brings a rich and well-balanced color palette to the table, with a Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery feeling. Congrats!"
